Single-Use Plastics in Fresh Food Packaging Industry

thumb3
detail-5

The human nature to prioritize durability and convenience over long-term impacts has been one of the key highlights of the throwaway culture. The throwaway culture which began after World War 2 has been one of the key reasons to an exponential increase in piling up of waste across the world.

Though, we are seeing a paradigm shift and people are becoming more conscious of this behavior but there is no denying that deep down a lot of us have accepted the fact that there is no escape from Single-Use Plastics and they are indispensable to many industries and applications.

A proof of this is the fact that trendsetters like USA have been very cautious in laying down laws for single-use plastics and it has been done only for a few specific applications. One could argue that this has been done just to show that public opinion is being valued by the law.

If we look at the current scenario, many large corporates are on the right path to rethinking use of plastics and by the next decade we might see some major changes in our Single Use Plastic waste generation. But what the world needs is to drastically reduce our plastic waste generated today and a decade of single use plastics is something which the world cannot afford. The 3Rs were first introduced in the last century and Single-Use plastics are still thriving at the cost of our environment.

Single Use Plastics in Fresh Food Packaging

One of the most commonly used Single Use plastic applications are in the Fresh Food Packaging Industry (PVC films). This is also an industry where paper products cannot become a natural substitute for most applications.

We cannot ignore the fact that many innovations have been made in the Packaging industry, but we cannot deny that the fresh food packaging industry has been devoid of such innovations and has failed to move on from Single Use Plastics.

Many packaging specialists believe that the infrastructure set up for packaging is investment intensive and the incentive to switch from Single-Use Plastics to other options is low. Training costs will also be very high given the volume of population employed in this industry.

Thus, the most perfect solution on offer would be a solution which can work with the existing infrastructure and requires minimal training while giving similar results as the Single-Use Plastics can.

This hypothetical Win-win situation is a food for thought for many industry leaders and pioneers. While many prefer to remain in their comfort zone and choose to go with the flow, the one who chooses to stand against the tide and do the unthinkable will change the shape of this industry and prove to the world that the Fresh Food Packaging Industry is capable of redefining and reinventing itself whenever required.

An Era of Change

Last few years have seen an era where many entrepreneurs are venturing into this space. Specialty Polyfilms is one such organization building its foundation on the use of Recyclable plastics in the Fresh Food Packaging industry. Being a first in recyclable overwrapping films applications, there are very few direct substitutes of its range of products. With properties superior to single-use plastics and 100% recyclability, the cautiously moving industry has so far been less averse to such a change.

This change is proposed at a minimal cost and is the most acceptable solution in the market right now, which is why it attracts a lot of intrigue from many industry giants and many players are looking up to Specialty Polyfilms for more such revolutionary ideas.

Who is the culprit?

Most of us have become potentially well aware of the ramifications of BPA in plastic, and we give our valiant efforts to keep ourselves and children away from it. We make sure we do not buy products that have BPA in it. But should this mean that we do not mention another harmful and the most significant culprit in plastics

- The PVC?

Healthy Child is a Healthy Future!!

PVC—polyvinyl chloride or vinyl that has been described as a cancer-causing agent by World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research is found in a list of items right inside your safe homes, starting from children’s toys, medical aids to food packaging. This good faced, deceptive content is high on chlorine and makes toxic pollution in the form of dioxins that accumulates in animal’s fat reaching the extremes of the food chain.

Not just the aftereffects, but there are various negative ecological effects from the creation and utilization of this material, for example, issues in discarding PVC, make it tough to be reused. Plastic today has also invaded the Salt that we eat in the form of micro-plastics.

Children are not adults – their growing minds and bodies, their digestion and practices make them interestingly powerless against the effects of dangerous synthetic concoctions discharged by PVC. Phthalates released by PVC products are found to be most concentrated in children ages 6 to 11.

Healthy Child is a Healthy Future!!

Plastic is a wondrous material. It has helped in revolutionizing the whole concept of adaptability and flexibility. No one can ignore the economic benefits of this boon- turning into- bane material. PVC used in packing the food has a SAFER ALTERNATIVE- “Polyethylene wrapping films”.

Packed food is a modern way of life that can’t be ignored and it is the easiest way through which the harmful plastic makes its way into the fragile human body.

Children that are the future of this planet are turning environmental conscious. They not only want to protect their sandwiches from getting staled but also their planet from getting chocked.

Solution?

Yes, PE Plastic Wraps by Specialty Polyfilms.

The idea is to Reduce, Recycle and Reduce. PE plastic films help in the circular economy where items are 100% recyclable, used less due to lower density and reused.

What Can You Do?

You can take steps to create our planet green again, and at the same time help the children to have a healthier future.

Go PVC-free!

Like the Stone Age and Iron Age, we are living in the Plastic Age. Alongside a solution to the existing plastic problems, a new plastic future is also required. Switching to Safer Plastics is the first step towards it. In the grand scheme of things, these steps are quite minuscule, and some might term them frivolous. But if we keep sitting and waiting (and writing) for the ‘big’ change, it’s highly unlikely to come out of nowhere.

We can’t just stop using plastic altogether.

The future of plastic lies not in its complete demise but its reinvention and better use.

Use PVC Replacement packaging

Use Recyclable wrapping films

Use Specialty Polyfilms’ products

Importance of Quality Plastic Wrap in the Foodservice Industry

image

Who would know better than a restaurant or hotel owner about the importance of quality food packaging in everyday life? Longer shelf life, food safety & preserving freshness is at the heart of the business in the HoReCa (Hotel Restaurant & Catering) Industry. The ability to maintain that food quality implies the extent of success for a restaurant owner.

In the post- COVID world, a mere packaging material to be used for covering and storing food is not good enough. Our priorities have changed, with restricted public gatherings & congregations. People now prefer and are also recommended to take food home, to avoid eating at public gatherings and at crowded places. Given this trend, the biggest priority right now is personal and environmental safety when it comes to food packaging. The solution would be to provide every kitchen with storage & packaging materials that are non-toxic, recyclable and sustainable and that also meet the CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) goals on sustainability.

Specialty America believes in the core values and understands the social responsibilities of the hotels & restaurants industry. Not only do we provide a quality packaging wrap that keeps your food fresh and safe but also an environment friendly product which is 100% recyclable. Since it is made of polyethylene (PE), it is free of any harmful substances such as chlorine or phthalates unlike Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC) film which often contains carcinogenic substances and is not recyclable. To add to that, we provide a range of safe cutter options from plastic serrated cutter to the much smoother sliding cutter, especially keeping chefs of high-end kitchens and fast-food outlets in mind, for the ease of wrapping uncooked/semi cooked food in your kitchen. The cooks and culinary professionals will be able to effortlessly handle the film because of its excellent cling without any entanglement. Specialty Polyfilms uses Low Density Polyethylene for producing its films, which enables a few excellent characteristics like clarity, cling and high stretchability among many others.

In the food service business, food preparation and presentation are two of the most important aspects of the brand value of a company. Combined with that is the packaging material that is used to cover the food that can also make a statement about the corporate social responsibilities adopted by the company.

Having a product that contributes to the betterment of the society and meets the corporate social responsibilities can be the difference between delighted customers and displeased people who will not visit you again. So next time you think of packaging wraps for your kitchen, think wise, think sustainable.

Customized Protective Films

Protective film also known as Masking film or Guard film is a material that protects surfaces that are susceptible to damage . It protects its substrate from minor or moderate abrasions, scratches and more. The current generation of Protective films is usually made of low density Polyethylene because of its lightweight, transparency and stretchable properties.
The concept of Protective film was first brought by the US military in the 1960’s to protect their helicopter blades from debris in the Air. Initially made with the intent to increase the longevity of the substrates, the Protective films now also focus on temporary protection of the surface to maintain its new look until it reaches the end-user. The films give temporary protection to the surface while manufacturing, transportation and handling of goods.

Protective films are now used in many industries and with the increase in popularity of the films and widening of its applications, industries had also started facing problems with the last generation films.

The Primary issue was that a single type of film was used for every application. Even though the product and the process of application are different in every industry. After thorough market research, it was found that the main objective for which Protective films are used i.e. maintaining the new look of the product has failed. The films which were meant to protect the surface and make it look new are ultimately deteriorating the look of the product as the glue gets transferred from the film to the surface causing stains/marks on it.
It was evident that a single solution (only one type of film) cannot work for every application. The only solution to the problems is the customization of the films based on industry requirements. Specialty Polyfilms had identified this issue in the early stages and has started producing Non-glue coated customizable Protective films. It is leading the way in customization of Protective films for different industries in the view to make multiple products that perfectly suit the industry requirements.

The customization is not only about changing the width, thickness and length of the films. It’s done at levels like adding UV protection, giving antimicrobial properties, hot and cold application, sustaining high temperatures, modification in the tensile and peeling strengths, coloured and printed films etc. Customization to this level gives a sense of ownership to the end-user and makes them proudly think of the films as their own special product.

These customization is resolving problems industries were facing with the old general-purpose films in the market.

Specialty Polyfilms not only focuses just on the development of a product but is committed to sustainable development. Hence, producing 100 % recyclable films. Made with the intent to resolve the problems, Specialty’s Non glue based films have made a significant position in the world market serving plastic, metal, carpet, glass, automobile industries and we are confident it will continue to do so.
